A shower can look perfectly finished while water is slowly reaching the wall behind it. Grout and tiles are not a waterproof barrier, which is why waterproofing shower before tiling is one of the most important stages of a bathroom installation. Get it right and the tiled finish has a sound, protected base. Skip it, and a small failure around a corner, valve or tray edge can become an expensive repair.
Why a tiled shower needs waterproofing
Ceramic and porcelain tiles are highly water-resistant, but a tiled surface has joints, cuts, movement points and penetrations for shower fittings. Even well-applied grout is not designed to stop water permanently. Moisture can pass through grout lines and any small gaps around the perimeter, then be absorbed by plasterboard, cement board, timber or the adhesive bed behind the tiles.
In a shower enclosure, this happens repeatedly. The wall is exposed to direct spray, steam and cleaning water every day. A proper waterproof membrane, often called a tanking system, forms the water-resistant layer underneath the tile finish and directs water back into the shower area rather than into the building fabric.
The extent of waterproofing depends on the layout. At a minimum, walls exposed to direct shower spray should be tanked, including the corners and the junction with the shower tray or floor. In a wet room, the floor and lower wall areas also need a continuous system designed for that use. It is not a case of applying a little sealant around the tray and hoping the tile finish does the rest.
Choose the right substrate before tanking
Waterproofing is only as reliable as the surface beneath it. The background must be flat, rigid, clean and securely fixed. A membrane cannot correct loose boards, crumbling plaster, significant hollows or a wall that moves when pressure is applied.
Cement-based tile backer boards are a dependable choice in shower areas because they are stable and moisture-resistant. Waterproof plasterboard may be suitable in certain wall applications, but it still requires a compatible tanking system where it will receive direct water. Standard plasterboard should not be used as the background in a showering area.
Check the manufacturer’s instructions for both the boards and the waterproofing system. Some membranes can be applied directly to certain prepared backgrounds, while others require a primer first. The adhesive, membrane, tape and sealant should be compatible with one another. Mixing products from different systems may work in principle, but it can leave uncertainty over performance and responsibility if there is a problem later.
Before waterproofing, make sure the shower tray is properly supported, level and permanently fixed. A tray that flexes can crack grout and break the seal at its edge. For wet rooms, falls to the drain must already be formed and the floor must be suitable for the selected waterproofing method.
Waterproofing shower before tiling: the correct order
The sequence matters because each layer relies on the one below it. Starting work before a surface is dry, stable or properly prepared is one of the usual causes of failed tiling.
Prepare and prime the area
Remove dust, grease, loose material and old adhesive. Fill holes and correct uneven areas using an appropriate repair or levelling product, then allow it to cure. The surface should be dry unless the chosen system specifically states otherwise.
Apply primer where required and give it the stated drying time. Priming controls suction and helps the membrane bond evenly, particularly on porous cement-based boards or backgrounds. It is a small stage, but missing it can affect adhesion across the whole waterproofed area.
Seal corners, joints and changes of plane
Internal corners, board joints, pipe penetrations and the junction between wall and shower tray are the vulnerable points. These areas move slightly as the building, tray and wall materials respond to temperature, loading and normal use.
Use the system’s waterproof tape or reinforcing matting bedded into the first coat of membrane. Purpose-made internal and external corner pieces make it easier to maintain coverage without folds or thin spots. Pipe collars should be fitted around mixer valves and outlets rather than relying on adhesive and grout to close the gap.
At the tray edge, use a suitable waterproofing seal or tape detail that bridges the wall and tray. This is different from the final sanitary silicone bead, which is applied after grouting. The concealed tanking detail provides the main defence if surface sealant eventually needs replacing.
Apply the membrane to the full shower zone
Liquid tanking membranes are commonly applied by brush or roller in two coats, with the second coat applied in the opposite direction to make missed areas easier to spot. Sheet membranes are fixed with a compatible adhesive and require carefully sealed overlaps. Both can work well when installed to the manufacturer’s specification.
Coverage and thickness are critical. A membrane rolled on too thin may look coated but fail to create the intended waterproof layer. Avoid stretching material too far, leaving pinholes, or stopping short of corners and edges. Follow the specified coverage rate rather than judging it by appearance alone.
Let each coat dry fully. Rushing into tiling can trap moisture, disturb the membrane or reduce its bond. Drying times vary with temperature, ventilation and the particular product, so the label takes priority over a general rule of thumb.
Tile with a suitable adhesive and allow for movement
Once the waterproof layer has cured, use a flexible cement-based tile adhesive suitable for the tile type, background and shower environment. Large-format porcelain tiles, natural stone and heavier wall tiles may need particular adhesive selection and fixing technique. Ensure adequate adhesive coverage, especially behind large tiles, to avoid voids where water could collect or tiles could crack under load.
Leave movement joints at internal corners, where walls meet trays or floors, and around fixtures where needed. These joints should be filled with a sanitary, mould-resistant silicone sealant after grouting, not rigid grout. Grouting a change of plane may look neat on day one, but movement can soon crack it.
Shower tray walls and wet rooms are not the same job
A shower tray within a standard enclosure usually requires waterproofed walls and a reliable tray-to-wall detail. The tray itself forms the waterproof floor of the shower area, provided it is correctly installed and sealed.
A tiled wet-room floor is more demanding. The membrane must be continuous across the floor, upstands and wall junctions, with waterproofing correctly detailed at the drain. The floor construction must have the correct falls so water reaches the waste rather than sitting against a wall or pooling beneath the tiles. This is a job where using a complete, compatible system is particularly worthwhile.
If underfloor heating is being fitted, plan the order of work carefully. In many installations, the heating system is installed over a prepared floor and covered as specified before the final waterproofing and tiling stages. The exact build-up depends on the heating and tanking products, so do not assume one sequence suits every system.
Common mistakes that lead to leaks
The most serious problems are often hidden behind good-looking tiles. Applying membrane only to the centre of the walls, without reinforcing corners and penetrations, leaves the areas most likely to move unprotected. Another common error is using ordinary acrylic sealant, grout or tile adhesive as a substitute for a waterproofing system. None is designed to perform that job.
Tiling onto a damp membrane, fitting tiles over an unstable tray, or failing to use silicone at changes of plane can also compromise the installation. So can drilling through finished tiles later for accessories without resealing the fixing holes. Wherever a screw penetrates a tanked shower wall, the fixing needs to be carefully sealed with an appropriate method.
Do not assume that a tile’s low water absorption removes the need for tanking. Porcelain is an excellent shower tile because it is dense and durable, but water can still find its way through joints, edges and service penetrations.
Before you start tiling
Take a moment to inspect the waterproofed area under good lighting. Check that the membrane reaches all shower spray zones, corners are taped, pipe openings are collared, and the tray or floor junction is fully detailed. There should be no exposed board joints, thin patches, tears or gaps around fittings.
