The right system is not simply a matter of buying enough square metres to match the room. Where electric undertile heating mats work best

Electric heating mats are most commonly used in bathrooms, en-suites, kitchens, utility rooms and conservatories. They are particularly useful in small rooms, where a radiator can take up valuable wall space, and in renovations where access to pipework is limited.

They work beneath ceramic and porcelain tiles, as well as many natural stone finishes, provided the complete floor build-up is suitable. Loose cable offers more freedom around curves, awkward corners, sanitaryware and fixed furniture. It can be the better answer in a small bathroom with several obstructions, but it takes more time to lay and needs careful spacing. Neither option is automatically better. One of the most common errors is ordering a mat based on the full room dimensions. Heating should not be installed beneath permanent items that sit directly on the floor, such as fitted kitchen units, baths, shower trays, vanity units or fixed cabinets. Heating mats are available in different wattages. Lower-output systems are often appropriate for well-insulated areas where the heating is intended mainly for comfort. Higher-output systems may suit rooms with greater heat loss, such as conservatories or ground-floor bathrooms, but more wattage does not remove the need for proper insulation.

The existing subfloor matters just as much. A well-prepared concrete base behaves differently from a suspended timber floor, and a floor over an unheated garage loses heat differently again. If heat is allowed to travel down into the substrate, response times are slower and running costs rise.

An insulation board beneath the heating system can make a substantial practical difference, particularly over concrete. It helps direct heat upward into the tiled surface and can reduce warm-up time. It also adds height, however, so check thresholds, door clearances and adjoining floors before committing to the build-up.

For timber floors, the priority is a stable, suitable base. Timber movement must be managed properly before tiling, and the chosen board, adhesive and any uncoupling layer need to be compatible with the heating system. Plan the installation before the adhesive is mixed

The heating mat is only one part of the floor. A dependable installation begins with a clean, sound and level substrate. Before laying the mat, establish where the thermostat will sit and how the power supply and floor sensor cable will reach it. The sensor should be positioned between heating cable runs, not touching or crossing them, so it can accurately control the floor temperature. It should also be installed in conduit where specified, allowing replacement if required in future.

A typical tiled build-up may include preparation of the subfloor, insulation or a suitable backer board, the heating mat, flexible tile adhesive, and then the tiles and grout. Some systems are covered with a smoothing layer before tiling to protect the cable and create a flatter surface. The exact sequence depends on the product and substrate, so do not assume one method suits every system.

Adhesive, grout and tile choice

Use a flexible adhesive rated for underfloor heating and suitable for the particular tile and substrate. The same applies to grout. The floor will experience gradual temperature changes, and the installation materials need to accommodate that movement.

Large-format porcelain tiles can work very well over heated floors, but they demand a flat base and correct adhesive coverage. Natural stone may need additional consideration because stone types vary in thickness, porosity and thermal behaviour. With any floor tile, a sound installation is more important than choosing the highest possible heat output.

Electrical work and controls

Electric underfloor heating must be connected, tested and certified by a qualified electrician in accordance with current UK requirements. The mat should be resistance-tested at the stages set out by its manufacturer, including before installation, after laying and after covering. Recording these readings provides reassurance that the cable has not been damaged during fitting.

It is usually sensible to think of electric mats as targeted comfort heating in smaller rooms.
